Meet Our Supplier: Healthy Food Ingredients
In connection with the NUTRO Greater Ground program, Mars Pet Nutrition has engaged one of our barley suppliers, Healthy Food Ingredients (HFI), to collect on-farm data to help understand the current status of soil health on farms that grow barley as part of their crop rotation in its network with hopes that it will identify areas where improvement can be made and guide future soil health efforts.
In the first year of the program, HFI identified four farms representing approximately 11,000 acres of farmland within their supply network from which to collect data. In collaboration with HFI, Eocene Environmental Group gathered and analyzed data that Mars used to establish a mass-balanced, baseline footprint of the barley crop sourced from HFI.
At NUTRO, we believe technology can play an important role in understanding soil health. That’s why we’re partnering with HFI to gather important on-farm agronomic data that growers can access in one place to better understand the current status of soil health on their farms and identify potential areas for improvement. We believe this will help growers better understand the impact of healthy soil efforts and potentially lead to positive impacts on the health of soil on their farms.
HFI and NUTRO respect the privacy of our growers and will only use aggregated, anonymized data. We believe that when we, together with our growers and suppliers, better understand the data behind soil, we'll have key insights into how we can alter the farming system to better support soil health.
Soil is where many ingredients the NUTRO brand uses to craft its nutritious pet foods start, and we believe our work with HFI is just one of the ways we can support soil health to ensure we are able to continue to provide our products for our furry, four-legged companions in the future.
