Frequently Asked Questions
Does My Dog Need Wet Food?
Your dog doesn’t necessarily need wet food. A complete and balanced dry kibble from the NUTRO™ Brand provides all the essential nutrients they need to thrive.
Dry dog food is convenient and easy to store. As your dog chews the pieces, it can help clean their teeth and help reduce plaque.
Wet dog food is also a good choice for your dog’s diet. Its benefits include:
- Increased hydration: Wet food has a higher water content, which can help keep your dog hydrated.
- Variety in flavor and texture: Giving your dog wet food can make mealtime more exciting. It tends to have more aroma and a softer texture, which can entice picky eaters.
The good news is that you don’t have to pick just one type of food. You can mix dry and wet dog food to create a balanced, tasty meal for your pet! Here’s an article with more information on mixed feeding.
How Much Food Does My Dog Need?
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Your dog’s nutritional needs depend on their age, size, and activity level.
To determine the right serving size for your dog, always refer to the feeding guidelines provided on the packaging of NUTRO™ dog food. These guidelines are based on your dog’s weight and can be adjusted depending on their needs.
For example, if you’re feeding your dog our Natural Choice Lamb & Brown Rice Recipe kibble, you’ll start with the following amounts daily (in cups):
- 15 pounds: 1 ¼ - 1 ⅓
- 25 pounds: 1 ¾ - 2
- 35 pounds: 2 ⅓ - 2 ⅔
- 45 pounds: 2 ¾ - 3 ¼
- 55 pounds: 3 ¼ - 3 ¾
- 65 pounds: 3 ⅔ - 4 ¼
And if you’re only feeding your dog wet food, such as our Chicken Entree Pate with Tomatoes & Carrots, they’ll need approximately 2 ½ trays daily per 10 pounds body weight. So, you’d feed a 30-pound dog about 7 ½ trays a day.
Regardless of their diet, monitor your dog’s condition and weight. If they start gaining too much, decrease the amount slightly. If they lose too much weight or appear hungry, increase it a little.
You can also ask your veterinarian about feeding recommendations for your dog.
How To Transition My Dog to NUTRO™ Dog Food
If you’re ready to switch to NUTRO™ dry or wet dog food, it’s important to transition your dog slowly to avoid any gastrointestinal upset.
Here are some simple steps you can follow:
- Mix 25% of the new food with 75% of the old food for about two days.
- Then, mix 50% of the new food with 50% of the old food for another two days.
- Then, mix 75% of the new food with 25% of the old food for about two days.
- Finally, switch entirely to the new food after six days.
This gradual transition gives your dog’s digestive system time to get used to the new food. Adjust as necessary and reach out to your veterinarian if needed.
