Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Food Should I Feed My Puppy?
Puppies need a lot of energy to fuel their growth. However, a German Shepherd pup will need more food than a Shih Tzu. But even within breeds, the right amount of food for one puppy may be too much or too little for another.
The best way to determine how much to feed your puppy is to start by following the feeding recommendations on their puppy food. Keep in mind that the amount to feed your puppy depends on their age, size, and activity level.
Feeding guidelines, which list the daily recommended portion, are included on all of our packages. Start feeding with this amount and adjust according to your pet's needs. Remember to divide the portion accordingly if you feed more than once a day.
When it comes to how often to feed your puppy, for puppies up to 6 months, feed suggested daily amount in 3-4 meals per day. For puppies 6 months to adult, feed in 2-3 meals per day.
Monitor your puppy’s condition and talk to your veterinarian, then make changes as needed.
Is Wet or Dry Puppy Food Better?
The type of puppy food you choose (wet or dry) depends on your puppy’s needs and your preferences. Both options can provide complete and balanced nutrition.
Here are some differences to consider:
Wet food typically contains more moisture, making it easier for some puppies to chew and swallow. It also tends to have a stronger aroma and flavor, which may be more appealing.
Dry food is generally more convenient because it doesn’t spoil quickly. It’s also easy to measure out portions.
If you’re having trouble deciding, remember that you don’t have to choose just one! Combining wet and dry puppy food allows you to take advantage of each type's benefits. It’ll also give your puppy some variety in their diet. When combining, ensure that you adjust the feeding guidelines to accommodate both diets.
When Can I Switch to Adult Dog Food?
A general rule of thumb is that your puppy can transition to adult dog food once they’re fully grown. For small breeds, this could happen on their first birthday. For larger breeds, it may take up to two years. Check with your veterinarian to determine when your puppy is ready.
Once it’s time to transition, it’s important to do so slowly. This allows your puppy’s digestive system to adjust and helps prevent tummy troubles. For most pets, consider making the change over a week.
If switching to this recipe or feeding NUTRO ™ Dog Food for the first time, we suggest you blend increasing amounts of the new recipe with your old food for six days.
Monitor for changes on the new food, including stool quality, skin and coat, body weight, appetite, and energy level. Talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions during or after the change.
