Frequently Asked Questions

What Do Kittens Like to Eat?

Cats are carnivores, which means they like to eat protein! They depend on high levels of protein in nutrient-rich recipes.

That’s why it’s so important to feed your kitten food that’s specifically designed to give them the nutrition they need for healthy growth, like NUTRO™ Wholesome Essentials™ kitten dry food.

Our kitten dry food includes real chicken as the #1 ingredient as well as omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, and essential vitamins and minerals to support their development into adulthood. Plus, the small-sized kibble is perfect for their tiny mouths and teeth!

Your kitten will also love NUTRO™ wet food formulated just for kittens, including Kitten Whitefish and Salmon Recipe and Kitten Chicken Recipe.

How Is Kitten Food Different from Adult Cat Food?

Kitten food is formulated with all of the essential nutrition for the growth stage of development. It also has more protein than some adult cat foods to support the rapid growth that occurs during the first few months — kittens can double or even triple in size in just a few weeks!

Additionally, dry kitten food kibble is smaller than adult cat food kibble so that your young feline friend can eat it easier because it’s designed for smaller mouths.

How Often Should I Feed My Kitten?

Serve your kitten dry or slightly moistened kitten food in multiple meals throughout the day. At six months of age, your kitten will be ready to reduce their number of feedings to two or three per day.

Keep in mind that these are general guidelines and that you should always consult with a veterinarian when deciding how often to feed your kitten.

How Much Should I Feed My Kitten?

The total amount of food you should feed your kitten every day is based on their age, weight, and activity level.

Talk to your veterinarian and read the feeding guidelines on the kitten food you choose and use those amounts as a starting point for your feline friend.

For example, the feeding guidelines for NUTRO™ Wholesome Essentials™ Kitten Formula with Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe suggest the following amounts per day based on age and weight:

  • Up to 8 weeks old and up to 2 pounds: ⅓ cup
  • 8-16 weeks old and 2-4 pounds: ½ cup
  • 16-40 weeks old and 4-9 pounds: ½ cup
  • 40-52 weeks old and 9-16 pounds: ¾ cup

So, for example, if your kitten is 20 weeks old, weighs 6 pounds, and eats four times per day, you would feed them ⅛ cup of NUTRO™ Wholesome Essentials™ kitten food at each meal.
