Do You Really Know How to Feed Your Kitten? You Sure?
Your new kitten is cute and cuddly and probably eats a lot. While there are plenty of things you may feed your kitten, it’s important you give her only what’s good for her because feeding newborn kittens can be tricky.
Just like us, kittens crave variety. In fact, a WALTHAM® study shows that a lack of variation in their diets for the first 18 weeks of life can later affect flavor preferences. The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition recommends feeding your kitten a varied selection so she doesn’t reject certain foods as an adult cat.
Here are a few more facts for feeding your kitten:
-
Never feed dog food to cats.
-
Kittens will eat 4-5 meals a day. Dry food should be moistened with water for young kittens.
-
Cats need more daily protein than dogs or even humans so give her highly digestible food that contains plenty of protein.
It’s best not to offer food straight from the refrigerator. Cats of every age prefer their food at room temperature.
-
Kittens have certain nutritional needs and should be fed a diet formulated specifically for kittens.
-
Do not feed human food to cats. Some human foods, such as onion and garlic, are toxic to pets.
-
Most kittens may move to an adult diet at nine months of age.
-
Male kittens of larger breeds may move to an adult diet at 12 months of age.
Fun Facts:
-
Kittens gain approximately 100 grams a week.
-
A newborn kitten’s body mass will have increased by 40-50x by the time she’s fully grown.
-
At birth, a healthy newborn kitten weighs between 2 to 4 ounces.
