Table Food is Not Dog Food.

Table Scraps: A Harmless Treat Can Hurt Your Dog

Dogs rely on their owners for their nutritional needs. That means you’ve got to pay attention to what you give them. What seems like a harmless treat could actually end up hurting your dog.

  • Fatty food can upset their stomachs and lead to indigestion and diarrhea

  • Spicy foods may not upset your stomach, but they are too much for your dog’s digestive system

  • Bones can be uncomfortable to swallow and may cause blockages or even intestinal puncture

  • Raw meat and unprocessed foods can make them sick

  • Chocolate can be toxic even in small doses. It is never a good idea to feed chocolate to your pet.

Health Symptoms to Watch for if Your Dog Eats Table Food

If your dog has indulged in table food with or without your permission, watch for the following symptoms, and head to the veterinarian immediately if you see any:

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Increased thirst or urination

  • Hyperactivity

  • Seizures

  • Rapid heart rate

The bottom line is that while your dog may love your cooking, your cooking isn’t always good for him. Show your love for him by treating him wisely with occasional natural dog treats or toys and not table food. Belly rubs work well, too.
