Nashville, TN – April 26, 2010 -- The GREENIES® Brand is kicking off its secondannual “Show Us Your Pet’s Healthy Smile” contest, an initiative dedicated to increasing pet owners’ awareness of the importance of a pets’ healthy mouth while celebrating the happiness pets bring to their lives.
Most pet owners understand the importance of a healthy mouth for themselves, but often
overlook that it’s just as important for their pets. Periodontal disease is the number one
pet health problem. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, three out
of four pets will suffer from some degree of periodontal disease by age three. And studies
suggest that the blood-borne bacteria and other pathogens from periodontal disease may
be linked to heart, kidney, liver and respiratory diseases.
With the “Show Us Your Pet’s Healthy Smile” contest, the makers of GREENIES®
products will educate pet owners on preventive measures they should take to promote
their pet’s oral health, including daily oral care at home. Tooth brushing, Veterinary Oral
Health Council (VOHC) approved dental chews or treats, or dental diets can help reduce
plaque and tartar build-up that contribute to periodontal disease. Additionally, pets should
see their veterinarian twice a year for a wellness exam that includes an oral check-up. If
necessary, the veterinarian will recommend a dental cleaning performed under anesthesia
to ensure that the cleaning is thorough and the pet is comfortable during the procedure.

a picture of their pet showing off their pearly whites to www.greenies.com and then
encourage their friends and family to vote. Dr. Bellows and Cameron Woo, editor of The
Bark magazine, will select the winner and two runners-up from the top ten pets receiving
the most votes.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three finalists with the healthiest smile. The first place
winner will receive a years’ supply of free GREENIES® Canine Dental Chews, the #1

home every day. The pet with the winning smile will also be featured on the cover of the
September/October issue of The Bark and receive a free year’s subscription, and be “up

Veterinary clinics that care for the top three pets will receive free GREENIES® Dental
